Massage Therapy Q & A

What health benefits will I gain from massage therapy?

Massage therapy is incredibly relaxing and relieves your stress, but it also produces a biochemical response in your body that stimulates healing. Massage therapy helps to:

  • Relieve pain
  • Relax muscle tension
  • Reduce anxiety
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Reduce your heart rate
  • Improve flexibility and mobility
  • Increase blood flow and lymph circulation

Studies show that some types of massage lower your levels of stress hormones and help boost your immune system. Massage therapy also stimulates the release of endorphins that relieve pain and neurotransmitters that improve your mood.

When might I need massage therapy?

The team at Synergy Rehabilitation & Wellness Center often recommends massage to help treat problems such as:

  • Trigger points
  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Muscle and ligament injuries

This is only a partial list because therapeutic massage relieves the pain and inflammation caused by many underlying health conditions.

What is cupping massage?

Cupping is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which cups are placed on your body and one of several methods are used to create a vacuum between the cup and your skin.

Once the cup is secure, your provider at Synergy Rehabilitation & Wellness Center performs a cupping massage by moving the cup across your skin, using the cup and suction to massage that area.

A cupping massage delivers the same healing benefits as all types of massages. As it increases blood flow, tissues in the treated area receive more oxygen and nutrients for healing. Increasing lymph circulation means more cellular wastes are eliminated.

In traditional cupping, or sports cupping, the cups don't move; they stay in place for a short time. That type of cupping causes bruising where the skin is pulled into the cup. You won’t develop bruising when you receive a cupping massage.

What other types of massage might I receive?

The team at Synergy Rehabilitation & Wellness Center offers several types of therapeutic massage. After reviewing your symptoms and diagnosis, they may recommend one of several massage techniques, such as:

  • Swedish massage
  • Neuromuscular massage
  • Trigger point massage
  • Sports massage

Each type of massage uses different manual techniques to target specific problems. For example, a Swedish massage uses kneading and circular pressure to increase blood flow and reduce muscle tension, while a trigger point massage applies concentrated pressure on a tight, knotted muscle.
